“Mollie and I first crossed paths years ago in a New York City townhouse we shared for a weekend with other mutual friends. Five seconds after getting my first Mollie hug, I knew this woman was someone you want in your life for the long haul.
You see, meeting Mollie is not so different from knowing Mollie; her warmth and openness are unwavering, whether in the company of a stranger or her closest friend. That’s just who Mollie is. She fully embraces her unique qualities, so it’s no surprise she wrote a book helping children embody their whole authentic, diverse selves.
Though I am not multiracial and have not navigated the distinct challenges a mixed race child may experience, I can relate to the exploration of finding your own identity when you feel caught between different worlds.
As a first generation Asian American who immigrated to the states as a child, I often grappled with the conflict of owning my heritage and staying connected to my culture, while also desperately wanting to feel belonging in the world I was raised in outside of my home. What does it mean to be both Chinese and American? I still don’t have the perfect answer to that question as an adult, but I wish I had a book like this growing up that encouraged me to celebrate the special inner qualities that make me who I am as a human, first.
